I have multiple HDDs in my system and one of them is Exterrnal 1TB USB 3.0 HDD. It has a very slow data transfer speed. I googled and found out that USB 3.0 is supossed to have a transfer speed of 60MBps but mine only does average of 500KB/s. Does this have to do anything with my RAM or CPU or ist the drive just broken.

here are my specs:

G4600 3.6GHz
8GB DDR4 single channel
GTX 1050ti
Win 10 Pro

Thankss for the help

Well, the actual theoretical max throughput for USB 3 is actually 500 MB/s. But there's no way a hard drive is ever going to get close to that. Especially external ones, which tend to be even slower.

What sort of files are you transferring? Lot's of small files? A single large file?

Also do you have a USB 3.0 thumb drive to test and are you sure your using a 3.0 usb port on your PC normally even newer PC's will have both 2.0 and 3.0 ports. Generally speaking the usb ports/connector are blue in color vs the normal black for 2.0/1 ports.

What are you transferring? 500 kB/s is about right for a HDD if you're transferring lots of small files like Word documents or text files.

How much free space is on the drive, and has it ever been used to download files with bittorrent? A HDD can be limited to these speeds even with larger files if it's badly fragmented too.

Thanks for the help guys i found out what was wrong. My friend made a lot of acounts on my PC as a joke and they all ran simultaneously and my CPU and RAM preformance was nearly halved. XD thanks anyway guys
