Low end Intel LGA1155 cpu + 1600Mhz ram?

Hello, currently I have an Asrock Z77 Extreme4 and 4x4gb G.skill ripjaws 1600mhz, but still no cpu, while looking at different sandy/ivy bridge CPUs, I noticed that according to intel website, the low end sandy bridge CPUs support DDR3 1066 and others like the core i3 2100, 1066/1333.

I tried google before asking here and what I found is the following:

1-A pentium G620 (or any other with DDR3 1066Mhz support) + 1600mhz ram= the ram will downclock to 1333 or 1066?(this is what I think should happen if using auto settings).

2-Others say its possible to manually set the ram at 1600mhz or use XMP as long as the motherboard supports it, and that it doesnt matters if the intel site only says 1066mhz.

3- Ivy bridge CPUs like the i5 3570k support 1333/1600 ram, but what would happen if you buy 2400mhz or faster ram(using a mobo that actually supports that ram speed of course), wouldnt this be the old G620+1600mhz ram all over again?

I still havent decided if I'll actually get a cheap cpu first and then upgrade later, but I wanted to know more about this ram/cpu topic before I decide to buy anything.

Before someone replies with an "OMG Z77 MOBO AND CHEAP LOCKED CPU? WHAT A WASTE", my budget is very limited right now, I know that Z77 mobos are mostly used because its the only way to get good overclocks with a K serie CPU, and that people looking into buying extremely cheap CPUs should look for mobos with B/H series chipsets, but the ram and mobo were bought with an extremely generous discount so I took the offer (both are like new and tested working).

Also, sorry for my bad english 🙂

After having read it, I personally don't know the answer but others here at Tom's most likely do. I think as long as the motherboard supports it you should be alright, but I'm not sure.

I just felt the need to say don't apologise for your English as it's better than most who speak it natively haha.

hey bro i didnt get what you exactly wanted to know . but ill give you few answers just to help you get little bit closer to your answer 😀

since you have Z board you will be great with K CPU . so get an i5 3570K . your rams will run at 1600mhz ( just enable the XMP profile from bios to assure your ram is working on 1600 ) .

any thing higher than 1600 requires you to overclock your CPU ( which will not be the default anymore ) . when your cpu & mobo support 1600 & your rams are 1600 then thats the most stable condition for both cpu & gpu

by the way , 1333 & 1600 have no noticeable difference & anything higher than that wont bring you wow difference either . 1600 is the best you can get , dont waste your money on faster ram . you wont notice anything . & 4x4GB is pretty WOW .

so just grab a good K cpu like i5 3570k ( which is so fast) . put it on that board . install your rams ( dont change them at all they are great ) . enable the xmp profile & ROCK 😀 !

Thanks JOOK-D 😀

DukiNuki, sorry if I wasnt clear enough, first I wanted to know if I get a cheap cpu for now like a G620 or similar, would I be able to set ram at 1600mhz? While searching on google I could only find people using these CPUs and 1333mhz ram and none of them with a z77 mobo(obviously).

And yep, I know that between 1333 and 1600 there is only a small difference in performance, probably only noticeable by running benchmarks.

The i5 and 2400mhz+ ram was just an example, I'm not going to buy any of that expensive ram, there are much better stuff to get first, like CPU -> SSD/GPU (currently using a HD 5770 on a dinossaur computer I have 😛)

The i5 3570k is what I've had in mind since it was launched 17-18 months ago, but right now it goes waaaay out of my budget, so I'm still thinking if I should get something cheap first then upgrade later.

no i dont think so . because memory types wont match then . i mean you have to OC your cpu to make it work with 1600 Ram . i think your ram will down clock it self to match your CPU's speed .

one more suggestion about cpu .

its right that you have Z board . but no body forced you to grab a K cpu ( which is expensive & is usable only for OCing ) . you can always grab a non K strong CPU

like i5 3470 or lower . think about getting a good non K i5 if they match your pocket 😉

G620 mem type is 1066 , which is not a good match with your ram & mobo .
