Low FPS in WoW, High FPS in other far more requireing games

Hello Tom's!

For some time now i've been running low FPS in most games 25-50 fps.

I have just recently changed my Mobo and my CPU Cooler in hope that it would solve the problem since my old mobo didn't allow me to OC my CPU because of heat.

Since then i have been running heavy AAA titles at 120+ FPS but WoW still lack the FPS.

Build (Taken from DxDiag):
Windows Home Premium 64Bit (6.1) Build 7601)
Mobo: AsRock Fatal1ty Killer
CPU AMD FX-8120 Octacore 3.1 Ghz (OC'd to 4.1Ghz)
RAM: 8gb Corsair. (Part number: CMX12GX3M3A1600C9)
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7850 2gb OC
PSU: Can't remember the exact model but It's 750W

What i've done so far:
Disable graphics overdrive in Catalyst control center
Disable all addons in WoW
Tried both 32 and 64 client of WoW
Updated graphic drivers
Running multiple virus scan programs such as :!avast, Malwarebytes, Darkcomet remover etc.
Turning down settings (helps very little)
Testing various stress programs for heat measures (heavyload, Prime95) Nothing passes 40 degrees celsius.

Would be glad to hear from someone who knows more about this than i already do myself 🙂

Hello,

it's not your system it's the game engine. Despite Blizzard trying to upgrade the engine here and there it's still a 9-10 year old engine and it's showing.

Even on a higher specced systems you would get FPS drops when in 25 main raids or in a crowded towns.

I know that the engine i somewhat ancient, but i do see friends with build similar in terms of power perform at a constant 100+fps in any condition.

Well,

I'm not sure if your friends have changed something in their settings or maybe just had some "special" hardware but with my i5 4670K and GTX 770 I dip down to 30-35 FPS in raids when all the spells go flashing. When I'm questing/farming I have to limit my FPS to 120 (as my monitor is 120 Hz) otherwise it goes 180+

I get about the same FPS on low settings with nothing around looking straight up into the sky, in raids i get about 12fps, though if i'm standing in shrine (not the main room) i can get about 60 fps on ultra but as soon as something moves it drops to 24-36 fps

Just a quick thought here, could it be Corrupted RAM blocks?

Ahhh, I see now.

I thought you were talking about FPS dips in some situations. I didn't realize it was a constant problem.

To be honest if every other game you play works fine then it's not likely to be hardware related.

You know what GMs usually tell you - delete the WTF and Cache folders (in WoW folder) and try repairing the client then try again.

Just so you don't lose all your setting etc. instead deleting these folders you can just rename them and give it a try.


P.S.Also delete or rename your Interface folder (again within the WoW installation folder)

I just tried.

On low it gave 50-55 fps
On ultra 28 - 38fps in Shrine main room. taking into count that it's late and not alot of ppl online it's a bad result

Went to another room (Small room) and on ultra it gave me 98-110 fps and roughly the same on low settings

I think you could fiddle with some of the settings in game. You don't nave to push all to Ultra. Maybe you can lower a few things here and there to make sure it still looks pretty enough but it's not that taxing on your system.

WoW is heavily single threaded, and unfortunately AMD cpus are not as good as Intel in that area. You are also running an 8120, which runs @15-20% worse performance compared to a similar OC 8320. I'd check the core temps. With a 4.1 on that cpu it's entirely possible you are over driving 1-2 cores and throttling the cpu, which you may not see with the 'average' core temp single reading.

All my cores run at the exact same temp, tested it after i hit 4.1 Ghz roughly 38-40 degrees on all cores.

It could be your internet connection, I know a lot of games like WoW need good internet connection or your character may lag around or other things may lag around. I would try going to a friends house, who gets 100 fps, and testing your pc there, if it is then there is not much that can be helped except getting better internet.

You are confusing lag (what a lot of people lately are using to describe their low FPS), which is the delay between the action of players and the reaction of the server with low FPS (frames per second).

Yes, connection can affect your gameplay but not in the way for you to get low FPS. When my ISP has had issues and I've had my in game latency to skyrocket to 2-3 K ms I still had the same FPS as when my latency was down to 15-20 ms.
