Low fps/lag in all applications

Just moved into a new apartment today and set up my desktop. After startup, I realized that the entire computer was running slow. While gaming, the fps is about 5 while the usual is 120. When typing in an internet browser, there is a delay before I can even see what I'm typing. The internet is not the problem and everything was running smoothly just before the move. It is a very intriguing problem to say the least.

I have tried updating drivers and multiple restarts. It is worth noting that I have Windows 10, however I have had Windows 10 since it was released. The largest variable, and what I suspect to be part of the cause, is the move. Any help is appreciated as I am running out of troubleshooting ideas.

One cheap thing that may be worth your time is just to re-seat all the components — RAM, graphics card, SATA cables, etc. Vibrations and changes in temperature can cause those things to wiggle into weird positions sometimes.

The next thing that comes to mind is to make sure that your CPU (and maybe GPU) temps are ok. If your CPU cooler came loose it may be causing your CPU to throttle like crazy, which would cause the kinds of things you're experiencing.

Yeah I checked the GPU temperatures and forgot about the CPU. Intel i5-3570k is running at 80 degrees Celsius while just surfing the internet. Maxed at 90 degrees while trying to game. Will definitely try re-seating everything in the morning while paying close attention to the heat sink. Thanks for the tip!

Alright so just adjusted the cpu cooler and it's spinning again (checked after recent post). Gaming is good again. Very helpful tip. However, my temperatures are INSANELY high. Running at 100 degrees Celsius while gaming and 85ish while idling. I am using a stock cooler and haven't reapplied thermal pasted since I built it three years ago. Obviously these things need to be done but I still feel like these temperatures are high.

If you're getting those kinds of temps your CPU cooler is definitely not sitting correctly on the CPU. You have some air between the CPU and the cooler. You shouldn't see much more than 85 while gaming, and idle should be down below 50 with a stock cooler and stock clocks. It would definitely be worth your time to clean off the thermal paste and reinstall it.

Seems the "line" method is gaining popularity over the "dot" method, by the way, using a line running from bottom to top, with the bottom being the side with the arrow in the bottom left corner.
