Low FPS Minecraft

I recently bought a GTX 760 and in the mineplex lobby I was only getting 70-90 fps. Also in some servers I was getting as low as 50. I have 8gb of ram and a fx-6300. Should I be getting more?

There are certain things you can do to try and increase your FPS, such as optifine.
But the problem lies in your CPU. It is a decent chip, but it has a low per core performance, whereas minecraft likes few, but powerful cores.

As long as your cooling is okay, you can attempt to overclock your CPU, this will improve your FPS somewhat.

Nope, your framerate is right where it should be. Minecraft will use only a single core on your CPU, so having a CPU with extremely low single-thread performance is hurting your performance. A GTX 650 can max Minecraft graphically without even trying.

Long story short, for the time being you need to have a recent Intel processor (2011 or newer) to get the most out of that game. As an example, the Intel Core i3-6100 can perform up to 150% better than your AMD FX-6300 in single-threaded benchmarks. My personal rig has a Core i5 and runs around 225fps in Minecraft.

Optifine actually lowers my fps

All you can really try with your current setup is overclocking your CPU to try and boost it a bit, but if you want to play it really well, intel is the way to go.
Even something like a Pentium G3258 will blitz minecraft, with its very fast 2 cores and small price tag, but if you do any other, more intensive gaming / work, an i3 or i5 will be preferable.
