First of all I'm sorry if my english sounds bad, I'm not a native english speaker, but I wish you could help me because I'm really freaking out!

I just bought a GTX 550 ti and a Corsair 450VS and I tried to play Assassin's Creed 1 and it is lagging, the fps is between 15 - 28, it never goes up 30. I tried to play Tomb Raider Anniversary and in some parts of the game my fps drops under 30, it keeps on 20 - 26. (It is always when I look to a place full of effect, as same as assassin's creed). I tried Hitman 2 and it goes ok, but some times it just drops to 26 - 28 fps, and I don't know what to do because it shouldn't be happening! And no matter the resolution of my screen (my native screen is 1920 x 1080), if I put 800 x 600 the fps doesn't change!

The only different my new gpu made from my old onboard is that the menu game isn't lagging anymore on 1080p as it used to. And I could play assassin's creed good in the beggining, before entering the city (I couldn't even play it before because the game lagged even on shortcut scenes). My driver is updated to the lastest by Nvidia.

There goes my specs:

Motherboard : ASRock N68-S
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+
Ram: 4,00 GB Dual-Channel DDR2
PWS: Corsair - 450VS
HD: 149 GB SAMSUNG
GPU: Gigabyte Gtx 550 ti.
Windows 7 - 32 bits.

Temperatures:
GPU: 60°C
CPU: 68 - 72 (Idle) - Over 80°C (Playing Assassin's Creed)

I need to know if I have bought a defective GPU because the warranty can only be used til thursday. I know there is a bottlenecking but it shouldn't be this way, I see people playing over 30 fps without any problem with simillar cpu to mine. I'm going crazy and really worried about it because I spent all my budget for months on both (they're very expensive in my country).

Try checking you system with CanYouRunIt web test : http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/CYRI/Requirements/assassins-creed/10696?p=a
And if you have Recommended pass then you have bad Windows shape - reinstall or better clean install
You may have malware spyware or something to eat you CPU

edit:
Try to clean you system from dust
Try to run some CPU - GPU tests - Furmark stability and look you GPU temp
Also you can see you have GPU lag under test
Keep eye on you CPU load - idle and under game
Assasin Creed 1 is not so hard for the specs you have - also try to lower resolution and see there is any better tahan 20 fps

Yes, I pass the recomended specs, actually I already did even with my onboard, but the game lagged like hell as I told before. I'm gonna do it tomorrow with a friend of mine, but I'm affraid it may not work because of my CPU Temperature which I think is high. So I'll keep this thread open for more answers, even related to any defect of my gpu (but I think it's pretty ok).

Don't...

Bump posts

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/283384-33-read-first

That processor is pretty old and running pretty hot, I would say you are getting a CPU bottleneck. No fps change with a lower resolution would definitely indicate a bottleneck.

If you could, check CPU and GPU load in game and post them back here.

My friend is cheking my cpu temperature already, I'll reply you both as soon as possible. Thanks a lot.

Edit: It didn't chance anyhing after cleaning my CPU, (AC) keeps unplayable (only some parts in minimum graphics, and TRA with all high graphics either (in some parts). The resolution doesn't change fps so much, the parts I see lagging (when there are a big map image or a lot of NPCs) keeps lagging the same way.

Edit 2: here comes the pictures from my loads (I don't know if there's something missing, I don't understand about those things. I ran the game with my CPU Temperature 70°C, but if I kept playing it my temperature would go over 80, by cheking carefully I think it didn't go over 83°c. I played with RivaTuner OSD Server, HWiNFO32 and Paint open nd Vsync was on. The only thing I'm worried about is that my GPU, as shown, didn't use all her power, why did it happen? Is it because my CPU bottlenecking?

This is low graphics:
normal1.jpg

This is high graphics in the same place:
lag1.jpg

This is low graphics in a place that lagged (fps are lower):
graffics%25201%2520normal.jpg

Here it is the same place as above but with high graphics (when I printd the real fps was 8, not 0/2 as shown on the picture):
laggraffic%25201.jpg

And here are the Levels of my GPU:
clocks.jpg

Memória = Memory

Was my english clear? Thanks for helping :)

Hi
As long i can read you GPU clock`s under load i think you GPU thinks that this game is 2D clocks are like IDLE state :)
I can think of 2 reasons :
- old and BAD optimized game
- bad drivers
Keep on mind that you CPU is holding you back after all - 80 to 100 % under load - you have not much you can do
- try to find some GAME patches - for every game you have LOW FPS
- try to find driver fix in the NVIDIA site - drivers or patch for the GAME you have LOW FPS - search the forum
In Addition :
- test you GPU and you System with some Performance Tests tools - f.e. PassMark and compare you results with other similar systems that`s how you gonna see where you bottleneck is
- test you system can run any of NEW RELEASED Games - ( canyourunit web ) - and install it just to see how you perform with that game
- after all consider upgrade to 4 or more core CPU System - 2 cores are not enough for resent games anymore ... or 2 cores + Hyperthreading in the recent CPU may do but not some 2-3 y. old cpu ....
As you can see my sign i have 4 core (8 threats) CPU and VERY VERY VERY old GPU - 5-6 years ago but i still have nice gaming :)
My last CPU was AMD Phenom X2 550 3.1Ghz - dual core CPU that was my bottleneck - i play less GAME for the last 2-3 years ..... and for the last 5-6 y. the only game i could`t start was Crysis 3 that came out recently ...... :)

The max temp for that CPU is 65C so overheating is clearly the problem it is likely the GPU added more heat inside the case and is pushing it over try gaming with the side of the case off and/or add more case fans or an upgraded CPU cooler.

Allow me to DISAGREE !
CPU Max Temps (C) 55-72 - > http://products.amd.com/en-us/DesktopCPUDetail.aspx?id=52
and 55 is for idle
and 72 under load
Here we have 79 - 7 degr. cannot cause that much low bottleneck
The real problem is that the GPU do not LOAD AT 100 % and just 50 % look at the GPU clock`s
GTX 550 ti specs are :
Core Clock: 900 MHz
Shader Clock: 1800 MHz
Memory Clock: 2050 MHz (4100 DDR)

and our friend here have this specs UNDER LOAD :
Core Clock: 406 MHz
Shader Clock: 810 MHz
Memory Clock: 162 MHz

Now once again :
f.e. run PassMark
if you GPU score i lower but close to 1925 you system is FINE -> look for game patch & driver fix
if you GPU score is lower than 1000 you have bad GPU or -> test the GPU on other system or RMA

Ofc. you can check you CPU + Mem Scores and compare them with other results - to check you bottleneck.

Edit: here what i found on NVIDIA web : http://www.geforce.com/optimize/guides/how-to-get-rid-of-lag-guide#1

How unprofessional guys.

Come on, let him run a bit more diagnostics.

@OP Click start -> Right-click My Computer -> Manage -> Performance -> Performance Monitoring Tools -> Performance Monitor
Run that, then play the game. How's the CPU usage? Post a picture.

Also, in Control Panel -> Performance Information and Tools -> Adjust Power Settings | Make sure it's on "High Peformance".

Have you got the latest drivers? Did you have an older card or one from a different brand previously; could be you didn't uninstall the driver.

What is your Texture Filtering Quality (That's an AMD setting. Dunno what NVidia calls it; it basically handles how pixels are managed. I see NO DIFFERENCE when set @ performance rather than high quality) set to? Try lowering it if possible.

Unprofessional? The CPU usage is right there in the screenshots - the CPU is constantly 85% or higher on both cores, and for some reason the GPU is underclocked.

Is it? My sincerest apologies. My eyes must have missed that section o' tha' integers.

Thank you people, I've already RMAed my PSU and my GPU before reading your lasts posts, but before it I'm gonna try to fix it. I don't think it's a driver issue, because I cleaned up all my last drivers and installed the new on, more than 3 times. I just checked the PassMark performance, I'm printing and I will upload and post here, just some minutes.

Here comes the summary of my benchmark
passmark.jpg

Here I put GPU and CPU only:
CPU.jpg

GPU.jpg

Here my score:
score.jpg

And something I found very very weird, my CPU look the specs of my GPU and see if it's normal:
cpuz.gif

This image below was taken alt+tabing Tomb Raider Anniversary:
cpu2%2520load%2520gpu.gif

The memory clock is 1025 MHz, but in gigabytes' site it says my model is 4100. Should it be the reason I had bad benchmarks results comparing to the same GPU I have with the nvidia specs?

Edit: Well, I searched for it and I found out that it is normal for GDDR5, because we multiply it by 4, so my memory clock is 1025 *4= 4100. But why is my GTX 550 Ti lower than the normal GTX 550 ti in this benchmark?

I think it's good, it's warm, my PSU is warm, but in idle, right now, my cpu is 74°c, I think it's hot, when I touch the back of my computer (right on the mouse/keyboard connector of my mainboard) I think it's very warm, maybe because of the cpu.

Edit: I really think of upgrading my mainboard/cpu/memory soon, but I fear the fact that it won't change my problem if the problem is in my gpu or psu (what I think it isn't).

Dude .....
Export you PassMark score as Base Line - .ptx file
Post it here like a file or PM me an link
I can`t see damn think on you pic`s i see only that you scores are damn low .......
Score like 347.1 are only good for Microsoft Word not for game !
And you GPU load is below 10 % on the last pic. (Tomb Raider Anniversary)
I advise you to :
Make CLEAN OS install
Install all newest drivers
Run passmark again and compare with 347.1 result you have now
If they are close I advise you to upgrade Mobo-CPU-RAM

And stop this argue for the CPU Temp - it`s FINE you have OLD CPU (May, 2006) that works on 77 degr. you have 79 - 80 period !
PSU - leave it ...... you can`t bottlenech here
- you can have many problems but not related here problems

Here is my old PC passmark base line : https://www.dropbox.com/s/e9emn8x6qadwwkf/Nik-AMD%20Phenom%20550.ptx
You can import it to you PassMArk like base line and you can see where you problem is

The CPU compare is http://cpuboss.com/cpus/AMD-Phenom-II-X2-550-Black-Edition-vs-AMD-Athlon-X2-4600
- geekbenck is good for fast CPU test - run it you must get close to 2,869 points
The GPU compare is http://gpuboss.com/gpus/GeForce-GTX-550-Ti-vs-ASUS-ROG-Radeon-HD-4870-770-MHz-512-MB-specs
- Release date Mar, 2011 vs Oct, 2008 no comment ...... you must ROCK with this GPU you have

To be polite here i`ll give you this example :
You cant just take out you old car engine out and when you put Lamborgini Engine there to expect you have the fastest car ....
You still have you old gearbox, suspension , clutch and other old parts slowing you down ...

Ok, I can't make a clean os install because I need some files and my pc isnt recognizing my dvd and cd rom, and I don't have time, if I do it i may lose my warranty because first I need to fix my dvd room to back up, so... the warranty wrors only til tomorrow. I'm gonna do what you said, some tests and compare our benchmarks. And about the pictures, you can copy the links and open them in a new window, it will be readable because of the zoom.

Here is my BaseLine, I ran it right after I turned on my computer, I got a higher score, there is my baseline link:

http://sharex.xpg.com.br/files/4708557582/LipsBran_Baseline.ptx.html

You gotta wait 15 seconds before downloading (Por favor aguarde 15 segundos - Please wait 15 seconds)

And I didn't understand what you meant by comparing my results with yours and the gpu/cpu compare. I'm a newbie at it, so could you do it for me checking my baseline?

And I know I have a crap mobo+cpu+ram but I saw people playing games normally with the same cpu/gpu as mine, you can check it out on youtube. I was planning to buy the other components 3 monthes from now, but I think I need to do it right now.

OK
I`ll skip you lac of OS installation process - i use USB not DVD past 5-6 years and you can ceep you current OS you can roll back the old one OS after test INTACT ..... some other time i can explain in detals

NOW ..... You CPU is causing the trouble !
I think you have wrong CPU FSB / CLOCK in the BIOS !
- i CAN`T open you baseline link - it`s gimme error "The content you are looking for was not found"
- i manage to check you previous pictures
according of you test you have 511 points CPU test
according to other ppl score for the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ is 1365
according to you CPU Passmark result you have CPU slower than the #1 BASE LINE about 295%
Core 2 Duo E8400 = 2017 points
You`r CPU X2 4600+ = 511 points

that`s why you have AWFUL GPU performance - looking at GPU PassMark results
according of you test you have 1046 points GPU test
according of base line #3 that is also NVIDIA 550Ti 1998 points GPU test
Or ......... you have 91% worst results compared with the SAME GPU
More ..... DirectX 9 complex test you have 316 % worst result than the same GPU

And as i `m begain to give up on you system i can give ya one last hint:
Download this tool : HWINFO 32 - http://www.hwinfo.com/download32.html
Run any game or GPU test
Run HWINFO 32 and gimme picture of System Summary window - i wanna see You CPU clocks under load.

Ok, Im gonna do it when I get home, and right after it I'm gonna send my gpu and psu to rma just to check something, because my psu is a little bit noisy. But no problem, thanks for helping me, while my gpu and psu are in rma I'm gonna try to find a good mobo+cpu+ram. But I'm still gonna make that last test you've asked me so you can check. Ok? :)

Here are the pictures of HWinfo, you can check it.

Before playing:
hinfo1.jpg

Playing:
hinfo2.jpg

I've already sent both GPU and PSU to rma, so I can't do more tests. I think it will be 1 month there, as the time pass, I'm gonna buy a i5 2500k (I wanna change my gtx 550 ti in the future), a good mobo and ram memory (8GB). I'm really grateful for you helping me to solve this out, I didn't think it was my cpu bottleneck but now I really think it is. I'm still here to read your last answers and when I get my gpu/psu and my new cpu+mobo+ram, I answer here telling you how my FPS in game are.

I still fear the fact of spending money right now in this combo and the problem still keep freaking me out, but I don't think it is gonna happen, at least I hope it won't. Once again, thank you a lot of spending your time trying to help me. 😀

I`m speechless .......
I was ready to bet you have under clocked CPU now i see it runs on 2,4 Ghz and i can`t explain why you have sucha low benchmark points .........
The only good reason is you OS fkd up or NVIDIA drivers .....

Any way you make me so damn provoked that i`v installed this AssasinCreed on my PC for testing
as you see my specs are way more than you`rs but you GPU NVIDIA GTX 550 ti is BETTER than mine ATI HD 4870 atleast mine is 3 years OLDER than you`s :)
So here is the shot with worst than you`s GPU and decent CPU and RAM :

As you see my CPU is lower than 20 % :)
GPU is 95%
FPS are 57.9
And the settings are HIGH ALL and the resolution is 1920 x 1080

So it`s not you GPU i can bet - no RMA needed

I hope i`v helped !

Omg now Im really going crazy! But if my problem isnt my cpu, why is mine way higher than yours in usage, there must be something really wrong, mustn't it? And what do you think is my best choice?

1. Wait bout a month to get my psu and vga back (clean my os when it comes back and start from zero and ser if it solves the problem).

2. Buy a i5 2500 + mobo and ram, clean my OS and reinstall it, and start from zero with new components?

(Don't forget the fact that I'm really worried about buying them, because I'm gonna spend some money I shouldn't and I'm scared about it keep not changing anything about my fps and game performance).

You got me wrong !
I think it`s you CPU after ALL !
Bit i can`t explain my self why you CPU looks OK - clock GHz and you still have lower scores ...

I think you GPU is JUST FINE
I think you PSU is JUST FINE

And DON`T worry if you go for the New Mobo and RAM you gonna have way better SCORES and you GPU will perform better - at least on the same games

Go for the clean OS install - as i advised you before
If you not satisfied after that go for the Upgrade

Ok thank you, I don't know how to select the best answer, but anyway I'll be back soon to tell you if things got better. Thank you a lot, I'm very very very grateful. Thanks you =]
