Low FPS Problem on all games

Hey everyone,

I recently got this low FPS problem on all my games. I have a MacBook Pro with Windows 8.1 on it with a Nvidia 650M GT Graphics Card. The games slow down to 12-15 fps in a few minutes and turns back to normal again. This happens over and over again. I thought that might be about GPU Temperatures but a stress test gave these numbers. Seems normal to me.

Idle : 60-63°C
Stress test: 75-82°C

This begun a few months ago so its a problem pretty new. I believe it firstly begun with the game "Watch Dogs". But after that, all the other games had the same issue. I tried to upgrade (340.52) and even downgrade (334.89) the drivers but nothing has changed.

By the way recently I got a HDD problem too. But I think I fixed it. Could that be the problem? I can bring it to the warranty if its a hardware problem but wanted to be sure first.

I have attached a captured video, so you can check it to see the problem. There is a FPS counter on the right upper corner. Hope it helps..

Thanks.

Solution
I finally found a solution for the problem.

I brought the Computer to the Apple Store today, after some tests, the guys told me that my Computer is in perfect condition and I had no Hardware problem. I was angry at the beginning but then he made sense. He told me that some Updates on Windows could cause the problem. Then I noticed that I recently updated to Windows 8.1. Just Downgraded to Windows 8 and bingo. Everything is working fine again. 80°C is my max. Temp. right now.

If anyone has the same problem, just try that.
Thanks everyone..

the problem is that the 650m is not efficient enough for games like watch dogs.. and i figure all the games that you have been playing recently are graphically intensive games .. what were the other games you were playing ?

Sniper Elite III and Wolfenstein The New Order had just the same problem...

those are all modern games so there is the problem there wolfenstein is a bit intensive .. this problem can only be fixed with an upgrade ..

I just tested Tomb Raider, which I have played with High Quality settings before without problem last year. But I had the same results. Still low FPS drops every 3-4 seconds...

And I also tried Wolfenstein again, which I have finished without any Problems. Also having the problem.

So, clearly something new has happened.

Here is what happenes as I'm playing any game...

so then maybe its heat that is causing the gpu to act up like that on you .. try getting it servicedby a computer repairs person in real life and see if its the heat

These graphics cards could barely run next gen games on low. Sorry bro but ur gna have to upgrade ur laptop sooner or later.
For more info go to:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GT-645M.81417.0.html

Scroll down and you will see the fps rates of previous gen games such as bioshock infinite, metro 2033, mw3, skyrim…

These cards could run some of those games at med with a gd fps (50+ fps). But comparing them to next gen games… well…

And don't forget that when you overload ur GPU (tomb raider as you mentioned) the GPU will overheat which will cause a huge FPS drop or even crash the game. So i guess you should decrease the graphics to med or even low depending on the game you are playing, or the next thing you'l be doing with your graphics card is a BBQ.

He already said he was able to run it before without any issues, it's not about his video card being old, people.

Right, do you have enough space in your HDD? Also, heat could be an issue, as laptops tend to overheat quite quickly. Have you monitored your CPU's heat? Could be that. Have you noticed your PC slowing down as well or is it just in games?

Thanks man, I almost was giving up the forum :)

I have lots of space on HDD, but had some slowing down issues on the HDD recently. Found a way to fix it somehow.

And yes, I only got the problem on the games. The other softwares can't force the Computer so much.

You may be right about the CPU. The last result show me that its over 100°C. But I don't know how to reason with it. Does it mean that I have a hardware probelm, or do I just need to clean the fans from dust?

Thanks again ...

Here is Tomb Raider, that the first time I'm experiencing FPS drops on this game on this Computer....

Definitely the CPU. Above 90 celsius is already very dangerous for your CPU and may damage your hardware permanently. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT run any CPU intensive programs until you fix the issue, or you're risking CPU damage. I have no experience with cleaning up laptops myself but you may risk it and attempt to clean it yourself by looking for tutorials on google or you may take it to someone who knows how to do it. You may also have to change the processor fan as this kind of temperature is completely abnormal.

If you have any more questions, let me know.

Future note: Laptops aren't for gaming, man. Get a PC if you wish to play stressful games on it.

I think we all agree to that, PC's have twice the performance for half the price of a laptop, but you cant move it where ever you want to like college or work...

Thanks for the answers,
I still have warranty so I will bring it to the service first. I hope they can clean it and fix the problem.

Unfortunately I can't afford a PC, a Mac and Laptop at the same time for now. And I need a MacBook for work. But my previous MacBook Pro worked perfectly for 6 years without any problems (I gave it to my little brother which he still uses). So I thought I could work with a new one.

By the way, I played the same Tomb Raider game on my previous 2008 MacBook Pro without any problem. That was great...

Anyway, thanks for the help...

I will share the results here.

Did you try reinstalling drivers ?
I suggest you give it a last try
