Low fps with GTX 970

I accidentally broke the PCI X16 3.0 slot on my MOBO and, now, I've put the GPU to the PCI X16 2.0 slot instead. The first game I tested was Sleeping Dogs. The problem is that it was lagging. The cutscenes had abrupt fps dropdowns and the gameplay ranged from 40 to 45 fps. Everything set to extreme. Could the 2.0 slot be the issue of this lagging? Would it be dangerous to try the 3.0 slot even if it's slightly broken?

My card is the GTX 970 Gigabyte Windforce 3X OC and my CPU is the i5 4690k. I also have 16 gbs of ram.

what were your fps before you broke the 3.0 slot? Even 2.0 is not enough to bottleneck the card

was your fps better before? yeah I also think (if memory serves me right) that 2.0 is enough for a 970.
try other games, or do a benchmark
