So i wanted to get an oculus rift for my pc. I have an AMD 10-7860K CPU and wanted to get a gtx 1060 6gb. Would i be able to run games like budget cuts on low settings and it run fine?

Solution

Yes, at a bare minimum you want a i3-8100 (or more preferably a AMD Ryzen 2600), 16gb DDR4 (2666 for Intel, 3200 for AMD) & a GTX 1060 6gb or RX 580 8gb. You'll also require a new motherboard.

Thanks so much. Do you know any good motherboards.

Well for AMD you'll want a B450, the Asus ones are quite good.

I am currently on 8gb of memory so should i get another 8?

Yeah, you pretty much need a new system top to bottom. As suggested by Wildcard I woudl go with a Ryzen 2600 and new motherbaord and then get a 1060 or if a RX580 is on sale for cheap one of those.

VR even on low is quite demanding since essentially you are rendering two separate images that need to be at a high refresh rate(otherwise you will be getting motion sickness)

As I said you can always try the Steam VR Performance Test but I doubt a 1060 with the AMD 10-7860K or a Ryzen 2600 with the 1030 will be enough. You need new of both.

No, your current memory is DDR3 and you need DDR4 for the newer components.

Yes DDR4 is a type of RAM. This is a United Stated build but you can choose many other countries on this site to find the best prices of parts.

The only other thing you need to worry about is your current power supply. It needs to be a decent 450watt or better. I would personally get a 550 watt. If you are unsure of what you have or it is a lower then 450 then I would buy a Corsair CX450 or 550 (grey and white lettering not green model) or a Corsair CX450M/550M PSU.

So would this be okay for vr?

Yes that would be fine for VR.

Yes. Maybe not on ultra settings or anything but def medium or high no problem. Its a much much much stronger system then you have currently.

If you have the budget you can always get a stronger graphics card as well, the RTX 2060 will be around 350 USD which makes it one of the best cards at that price point

Yes, unless it's a prebuilt (HP/etc) case it should work with the new parts.
