Low VRAM headroom with RX 480 8GB Asus Strix O8G Gaming

Asus Strix O8G Gaming RX 480 Stock Specs: Core-1310MHz-1330MHz boost, VRAM- 8GB 2000MHz

I have spent the past couple of days working on a stable max overclock. For the core I can achieve 1440MHz stable using the maximum Power Limit alone, and 1463MHz at a 1.2125v(+150mv) overclock.

However, when I attempt to overclock the RAM it will start showing errors using HWiNFO64 anywhere above 2024MHz. This even happens at the 1310MHz stock speed.

I must have read a dozen threads and watched as many videos where people are getting 2175-2200 out of their RAM. I am ecstatic over the core clocks I have been able to achieve, but I am worried about the durability of the VRAM. Should I be concerned with the lack of headroom?

It could be an RX 480, but not a GTX 1080. The GTX 1080 starts at 2500/5000/10000 depending on the number you look at.

I have not had any crash codes pop up. If I push it past 2075MHz at some point while gaming or benching I get spontaneous artifacts, or my screen just goes a certain solid color and I have to reboot. HWiNFO64 is a program that monitors GPU memory errors among other things, and it begins to report errors at 2024MHz.

I think you need to up the power. I see quite a few posts where memory increases without voltage increases cause immediate problems.

Unfortunately there is not way I know of to increase the voltage of the vram on this card. You can increase the core voltage and memory controller, but not the actual vram itself. I have tried overvolting and undervolting the controller and I still get error readings at 2024MHz. I will look through the event viewer when I have time tonight.

You are not restricted to using the OC tool provided by your card manufacturer.
You may also use the tools provided by other companies who manufacturer these cards, like XFX, EVGA, MSI, etc - their programs may have more options available to you for adjustment.

I have tried MSI afterburner, Asus Tweak, and Wattman. No vram voltage control. I will check out others.

I haven't used an AMD GPU for a little while, so I don't know the ins and outs of wattman, but i did find this excerpt:
"AMD’s WattMan again provides granular control over the RX 480’s onboard RAM, with the ability to over-volt the RX 480’s GDDR5 by up to 150 mVs and raise clock speeds from 2,000MHz up to 2,250MHz. We were able to hit a stable memory overclock of 2,200MHz, or a 10 percent overclock, after manually raising the voltage to 1,150 mV."

Might just be a hard to see/find feature. I know the way Precision from EVGA GUI is set up - some of the things are really hard to see. Its like they never got out of the skins phase of the early 2000s.
