I have a 100 Mbps fioptic service. Direct connect gives speeds around 90 Mbps. All wireless devices show speeds of 10 to 15 Mbps. Actual upload speeds average 20 Mbps. All devices are fairly new with 802.11 bgn. I have called the ISP several times and they tell me that is about the best i can expect. Sorry, not buying that one. They then tell me I should purchase my own router instead of using theirs. Router is ZyXEL Model VMG4381-B10A. Is the router the problem?

Quick question.
When you use WiFi, generally how far away are you from your router?
If there is a difference on the floor you're on, walls between...
Disconnect all devices from the network, and connect just 1 pc to the router via ethernet.
Try a speed test using speedtest.net, and if you still don't get what you payed for, your ISP is ripping you off so change.

Yes I did that and got 90 Mbps.So the connection is good but the wireless speeds are ridiculous. I think should be getting at least around 50.

If bandwidth is acceptable with wired LAN connection and only slows down when using WiFi, it's your equipment to blame quite likely.

If it was your ISP's fault your speeds would be bad on both wired & wireless.

Change your WiFi equipment (wireless router, WiFi adapter etc.).

Be sure to buy dual-band equipment (ac) throughout and use the 5GHz wireless band instead of 2.5GHz which is generally slower (quite considerably) according to my tests.

The router I think is the problem. It is supplied by the ISP (crazy). Any recommendations on router models?

Thanks for your reply.

If there is a difference on the floor you're on, walls between you and the router, then your connection will slow down considerable.

If you're right in front of the router with WiFi, are you still getting bad speeds? If so, then the router is definitely to blame.
