My Pentium D has a problem.

^That's the problem. The max temps. come from playing WoW at 1024x768 with almost every setting at rock bottom. The minimum temps. come from having the WoW window minimized. If WoW was NOT running, temps. could be 5-10 degrees Celcius below the minimum showed in the picture.

I've had this computer since 2005 and played WoW for a year or two, with no real problems except low FPS.

Specs(Gateway 840GM):
Pentium D 830 3.0GHz
Intel 945G
1 GB RAM (266.7MHz)

I ordered 2GB of RAM and a Radeon 4670, which arrive on Monday..

Short and simple, is there anything I can do to lower my CPU temperatures besides buying a new HSF/case?

EDIT: My internal temperature is only 32 Celsius..

Sorry about the posting in the wrong section, please move this thread if possible :)

^These are my new idle temps. after cleaning out the dust filled HS. Is there anything else you recommend? I will post again after playing WoW for 15-30 minutes and record the temps.

From what I can see, there has been a 10-30C drop from when it was full of dust. I am very pleased with the results as it's a dramatic improvement. However, SpeedFan still tells me it is too hot.

As mentioned orangegator said, reseat the heatsink with a new application of thermal paste.

Also if your case has any unoccupied fan slots you might want to think about filling those out.

You can set the warning levels in Speedfan to whatever you want. By default they are set pretty low.

also, that pd is an old netburst based cpu, it will run hot period....

this brings back good old memory of intel bashing for shitty cpus with shitburst and presshot (sounds hot with the press with high mhz, runs hot like a bitch in heat, performs like a fat man in a hot summer day)

oh how the days have changed

Pentium D 8x0-series or PD 9x0? The 8x0 series ran pretty damn hot, being two Prescott cores next to each other. The best bet with the original Pentium D chips and overclocking is to watercool. Or at least one of those heatsinks that requires an industrial-grade support framework...

yeah two presshots near each other is a great way to make a good egg fryer lol

and the OP has a PD 830, so it is definitely the worse of the netburst era....

and is that Klingon in your sig? the universal translator running on mySQL is broken over at klingonreference so I don't know what it means lol

Yep - dual Presheats gives you the Intel Prescott Furnace. Nice chip. Makes a room nice and warm...

My sig is taken from the Cthulhu mythos, and literally means "in his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming."

Klingon is so passé. I went for something out of horror fiction...

i had a PD 965.
i threw it out the window.
tried 5 different thermal pastes, 3 different cpu coolers, and even got a new case,
it would never go under 60c

i have an e8200 now that never goes over 35c
and its OC'ed
