Hi, all -

I haven't seen anything appear in this newsgroup since 28-April, and
it's now 1-May. I'm a bit concerned, so I'm sending this test
message to see if the PEBCAK or not.

To keep this post at least somewhat ADOM-related, I now have a
merchant up to level 12 doing nothing but throwing coins. Yeah, I
know he's not likely to get much farther without learning how to
fight hand-to-hand, but so far he's been lucky. Wish me luck in the
Big Room... :)

Yeah, happens from time to time. Hopefully not a trend...

News is sadly not the most popular media these days, last week my ISP
anounced that they would discontinue news support entirely due to low
usage (well anounced is not the right word, they quietly changed the news
info page to say that the service would be dinscontinued from may 1.).
Fortunately the average news user (supposedly only 1% of the tocal
costomer base of my ISP) is very vocal so they where probably quite
shocked by the amount of feedback they got once people became aware of the
plans. End of the storry so far is that they descided not the terminate
the service at this time after all (they are looking for ways to reduce
cost though, so the quality might be reduced at some point, or they might
outsource the newsgroup server to some 3. party or something). Scary
times, more and more ISP's drop news support siting low usage, and the
result is even fewer users and so more ISP's follow suit. Yeah there are
dedicated news hosts you can pay to get your newsfeed, but if the ISP's
doesn't support it chances are the number of new users the Usenet gets
will be very low indeed...

Err, sorry about that little rant there 😛

I've noticed it too. There were heaps of posts a couple of weeks ago

I'm currently training to provide tech support for a major broadband
ISP, and our instructor mentioned that only 2% of this ISP's users take
advantage of Usenet... But those 2% eat up 60% of said ISP's
bandwidth. :O Damn binary/warez f***ers... 😛

Heh, well my ISP have long since stopped carrying binary groups. Some
silly court ruling somehow made ISP's liable for illegal content on
newsgroups (though downloading illegal files over HTTP, FTP or P2P is
aparently still the individual users problem, guess it's some technicality
about news articles being served from the ISP's local news server or
something). Whatever the reason just about every local ISP used it as a
very convenient excuse to drop ALL binary groups overnight because *gasp*
they might contain illegal files (just think of all the smut on
alt.binary.astrology (or whatsistname) for example 😛).

Thanks for the well wishing. As it turns out, this PC never even got to
the Big Room... he ran into a tension roon on D:5 and got overwhelmed
quickly. I think the coup de grace was finally delivered by a black
hurthling ("Nice fissssssh"), but it could just as easily have been one
of about ten other monsters in that room.

Oh, well. That character existed primarily to give the obligatory
ADOM-related content to the previous post. I don't think I'll be trying
that experiment again any time soon!
