This is a quick question but I am having trouble finding a straight answer. The manual of my motherboard says that M.2 SATA drives will not work but M.2 PCIe drives will. I have this motherboard: https://www.newegg.com/gigabyte-aorus-z690-ud-ddr4/p/N82E16813145349
and this NVMe drive: https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-blue-sn550-nvme-500gb/p/N82E16820250134

However when I try to install Linux Mint from a USB stick it is not detecting the drive. Are the M.2 and the Motherboard compatible?

That WD SSD is NVME (PCIe v3 x4) so it should work. As For Linux, depending on distro you may need to format SSD to same Linux format that distro uses.

I also note in your mobo manual at the bottom of p.24 that you must somehow install an Intel driver BEFORE installing an OS on an SSD. It refers you to Chapter 4 (p. 36) that gives instructions I find a bit vague, but they talk about setting a BIOS Setup option to Enable certain downloads.
