Hello all,

Been a while since I last posted here but with the launch of Skylake I'm in need of some advice again!

Basically I want to buy a mini-ITX motherboard, most likely an Evga Z170 Stinger, and I want to use an M.2 hard drive. It says it has an M.2 Socket 1 Key E but the socket looks like it works on a pin connector basis rather than just slotting the card in (most of the drives look like tiny PCI cards). What gives? What would be compatible? Nothing worse than buying new gear and for it not to fit together.

Sorry if the above sounds dumb and thanks in advance for any help!

Edit: if you look at the manual online you'll see what I mean (I hope) - the diagram / photo isn't clear in my opinion

Solution

The M.2 key E is mostly for wifi cards.
The Samsung m.2 you got linked won't fit.

This is likely to sound dumb: how do you know it is Sata? The manual just says M.2 Socket 1 Key E - if it has a socket does that mean it's Sata (I assume since PCI-E pretty much says how it connects in its title?)

Forgive me - it's been ages since I've built a rig

M.2 socket E is normally linked to the pcie lane. For the ITX stinger, you do have an extension M.2 card.

Okay so:

1x M.2 Key E = PCI -Express
Extension card = comes with the Motherboard (?)
Thus = this would work:https://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-206-SA&groupid=701&catid=2104&subcat=2198 (?)

I hope I get it and thanks for the advice! =)

The adapter card/bracket supports an M.2 22.42 Key E device. I have never seen any drive in Key E. (B?, M?, B+M? Yes)

The answer might be late but help others ...

This MOBO has a VERTICAL M.2 Connection with the adapter which you have to fit with the small hinge . So I assume you can use 2242
