I would like to use an M.2 slot and up to 4 HDDs for space. Can I do this? I have heard some motherboards shut off the SATA slots when an M.2 Drive is connected. I can't seem to find any information about this.

Solution

not all m.2 ssd run on pcie. the newer/expensive one do. need to read the spec on the ssd drive to see which interface it used.
Of course it can run, No problem as long as your motherboard supports 4hdds. If the mobos shut off the sata slots when an m2 is installed, then the m2 would be pointless, also there is no reason for them to do that as hdds run on the sata ports and the m2 runs on PCI-E (same way as a gpu).

Ok, so what you're saying is if it uses a sata interface then it will shut off the on board sata ports right? If that is the case does it shut them all off or just some of them?

Yes but you still need to read the spec/manual of the motherboard to see if it will disabled any onboard sata port
