[SOLVED] M.2 NVME running at 1 lane instead of 4

I purchased a 1TB M.2 NVMe drive and an adapter to install the drive into a open PCIx4 slot on my mother board. I cannot for the life of me to get the drive to run a x4, as it currently runs at x1. I updated my bios driver and went bios settings and there is no option to change PCIe settings. I'm beginning to think my rig just can't handle it. Anyone have any advice?

x4 pcie slots are running just on single lane on consumer mainboards, its very rare to see any with more lanes
x4 lanes are mostly on 3rd pcie x16 slots
