I have a 2yr old motherboard that I want to install a SSD into. Reading about the M.2 standard, I felt the motherboard would support an M.2 drive via a PCIe -> M.2 adapter. I didnt read anywhere that the motherboard specifically needed to specify M.2/NVMe support, unless you wanted to plug in directly via an M.2 slot.

Motherboard: asrock n68c-gs4
SSD: WDS256G1X0C
Adapter: Lycom DT-120 M.2 PCIe to PCIe 3.0

The SSD is plugged into the adapter, and the adapter is in the PCIex16 slot. All physical specs are correct. But it doesnt detect the SSD in the bios (BIOS doesnt even mention NVMe drives obviously). Windows only sees an unknown "PCI Device". Is this all fubar? Is it even possible to use the SSD? Or do I need to scrap it and buy a SATA SSD?

FWIW - I'm not trying to boot from the SSD, just use it for storage. Does clover still apply?

On the support note - Why do the adapters exist if they don't actually provide any backwards compatibility? Is it purely to add an extra M.2 slot?
