M.2 SSD compatibility with motherboard

Hello, I have ASUS MAXIMUS VI HERO motherboard and I'm considering to buy Samsung 960 EVO SSD.
Since this motherboard doesn't have M.2 slot, will this SSD work if I use some adapter to connect it such as https://www.amazon.com/PCI-NVMe-NGFF-Slot-Adapter/dp/B078H6YW5C ?

I could not find anything about M.2 SSD compatibility in manual.

Might as well put that extra money into a good or larger SATA SSD, with that configuration even if possible you would not see any difference.
