I have the ASUS Prime Z690-P D4 motherboard that has 3 M.2 slots.

1 x M.2 22110 PCIe 4.0 x4
1 X M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 x4
1 X M.2 22110 PCIe x4 & SATA Mode

I have my Win10 installed only on a 1TB M.2 in the first slot closest to the CPU.
M.2 22110's are pretty expensive. So I have a 2280 installed there at the moment. Would having a M.2 PCIe Gen 3 SSD NVMe 3D NAND 2280 in the slot of the M.2 22110 really be an issue or is it safe to do so?
Thnx

It should work as long as there is a standoff for it on the motherboard to accommodate it.

Im pretty sure you would be limited to pcie 3 speeds however seeing as the drive is gen 3.

All 3 slots support 2280 size.
Gen 3 m.2 should work fine.
