I have an Asus Zenbook ux501jw and I was trying to install a Micron M600 512GB M.2 2260 SSD. The SSD itself works; it was recognized by my desktop computer and I was able to initialize it. However, my laptop does not recognize it at all, not in the bios or the Windows installer. The slot on the Laptop is M, the key on the Micron SSD is B + M. The original size is 2280, my SSD is 2260. I was told it was possible to put in a smaller (they're electrically compatible, I just need to secure it - I did it with tape).

The original SSD was a Samsung SM951 2280 and it worked fine.

Was I wrong to assume that the 2260 would be supported? It does say "only 2280 SSD's" on a sticker but I thought that was just physical size and nothing else.

It's a UX501JW-UB71T. I talked to Asus support and what you said is the actual reason. I didn't realize M.2 had different interfaces as well. The laptop only supports PCIe x4 SSDs, Sata III will not work.
