I tried looking for people with the same problem as me. but i cant really find any posts about this only on other motherboards.

I have a Asus Strix Z370F Motherboard and i just bought two used m.2 ssd's they are the same
Samsung PM871 128GB (mznln128hcgr-00000) Non nvme if that helps.

But the problem lies that only one m.2 slot works on my computer. The one that works is on the left side of the chipset under a m.2 shield. and the one that doesn't work is between the first PCi-e x16 slot and the cpu socket.

How can i make that one work. i tried going through the bios to check if the m.2 slot is disabled or something along those lines but i cant find anything. I already have a boot ssd so these are just for extra storage in my system.

I also tried looking in the manual but i cant seem to find anything there either.

Only one of those M.2 slots supports SATA M.2 drives, the lower one as you have noticed. The top one is for M.2 drives that use the PCIE interface such as NVME drives like the samsung 960 evo. Your M.2 drive is SATA only so you will have to use the lower M.2 slot.

Are both of the "m.2" ports SATA capable?
Not all are.

Some will take a SATA drive
Some will take an NVMe drive
Some will take both.

On boards with 2 m.2 ports, often they do not both take the same sort of drives.

Your motherboard manual only states:
"Supported M.2 type varies per motherboard"
So...you need to discover...SATA or NVMe.
