m.2 ssd wont boot into windows on new mobo?

Hi everyone,

I just built my first pc ever and for some reason, my SSD shows up in bios but won't boot? My friend who helped me with my build said that since there is a windows install on the SSD it should boot straight into it but it doesn't? Please help a brother out :^(



specs:
AMD ryzen 7 2700x cpu
evga gtx 1080 ftw gpu
gigabyte aorus x470 gaming 5 mobo
western digital 500gb sata m.2 ssd

For windows from a different pc to work, bios settings (sata controller mode, boot mode) have to be matched between them. Also there are possible compatibility problems between storage drivers required for both systems.

If you can't make it work, then reinstall.


I am able to go into bios and the drive shows up, however when I click on it and try to boot it goes to a screen that says "reboot and select proper boot device"
 


yes, windows 10 home 64 bit. How do i check my UEFI/BIOS settings? i tried both UEFI and legacy mode and it still doesnt work 🙁
 
1. Having the BIOS to be able to see the SSD is not enough, you need to tell the BIOS to boot from that SSD too.
2. If the SSD has already Win10 copy but is coming from another motherboard, this will not do too. You need a fresh Windows install on that motherboard.
 
Find boot priority settings.
There should be 2 entries:
  • Windows Boot Manager (Your SSD name);
    Your SSD name.
Try setting both these to 1st in boot order. Windows Boot Manager - is UEFI boot. The other one is legacy boot.

The ssd does have a win10 copy coming from another motherboard but the oem code was never activated. Do i still need a fresh windows install?
