The manual for my Supermicro X11SSV-Q shows the M.2 as
Expansion Slots1 x CPU ¦ 2 x DIMM 288-pin (1.2 V) ¦ 1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 ¦ 1 x Mini PCIe / mSATA
It's not clear to me that it support a PCIe m.2 or requires an mSATA m.2 SSD.
I'd like to switch our main configuration to an M.2 drive for ease of manufacturing, but am a bit confused as to which type of M.2 drive to purchase. I know the M.2 SATA will be slower, but that's not an issue for the device.

Have you looked at the mobo manual (pages 46 -47)?
Yes sir. I was a little confused by the statement in the manual that says: ...only dedicated for SSD devices with the ulitmate performance capability in a PCI Express 3.0x 2 interface for native PCIe and SATA support.
I wasn't sure if that meant it would work with a PCIe SSD or only a SATA M.2 via the PCIe slot. At any rate I did find an M.2 SATA SSD and it works, while the non SATA simply will not work - so empirically I have my answer! Thanks COLGeek!
