m.2 wifi card with no antenna

I am new to building a computer and thought since m.2 cards and antennas are sold separately, the antennas aren't needed. But I can't get the card to even show up in my Device Manager. Is this because I don't have antennas or could it be something else?

What is your motherboard? You may need to enable WiFi in the BIOS.

In a desktop computer a WiFi antenna is necessary if card is installed inside the case.
