Some caution should be advised when ordering chips from AliExpress. Many are sourced from salvage machines and are questionable at best in terms of if they will work at all, or for how long. But most people thinking to attempt this probably know that.

As explained in the article, there is a proprietary chip on the drive that is tied into the system firmware. It's not truly Apple unless they lock down the hardware to prevent easy user upgrades.
