Hi there,
Building a new PC and having problems. I've gone through a lot of steps in checking, so I've listed everything I've checked for below.
-Built a new PC using the M5A97 Evo 2.0 and a AMD FX6300 CPU. Using stock cooler.
-Booted up first time with no problems, but VGA display (GTX750Ti graphics card) went blank after about 60 seconds.
-Rebooted a few times, got same. All memory registered as being okay I think (16GB). DRAM LED may have been flashing but at this point I wasn't sure (case closed and wasn't checking).
-After a few reboots computer will not start up at all. Opened up case.
-CPU LED is solid and DRAM LED was flashing.
-All fans were working and spinning. ATX power cable and 8-pin CPU power cables connected. CPU fan connected and working. By sight, everything working.
-Realised that I hadn't used motherboard risers (which explained why it was so difficult to get the m/b to align to the i/o panel!), and removed everything from the case, having screwed everything in :-(.
-Disconnected everything and put motherboard on anti-static bag on wooden desk to eliminate chance of short-circuiting preventing bootup. Left PSU (Corsair CX500) in case and used cables to connect up motherboard. Removed all but one stick of RAM (left in slot no.2, which is preference if only using 1 stick of RAM, as per user manual).
-All fans working, no VGA post and CPU LED solid/constant. DRAM LED problem eliminated (probably one dodgy stick of RAM).
-After reading (and doing!) the builders' FAQ on these forums for troubleshooting, tried pulling off heatsink, removing and reseating CPU. Replaced heatsink. No change.
At this point the question is:
-Do I have a dodgy processor? In which case I'll have to return it (frustrating, but that's life).
-Do I need to apply more thermal compound? Keep in mind that when I WAS getting a VGA post, temperatures for the CPU in the UEFI BIOS seemed very low (a few degrees above room temp.).
-Is there anything else that I could do? If so, what?
Sorry for the long post, but I know that people on these forums are very thorough and I wanted to really exhaust as many possibilities as I could before I posted.
Currently feeling that I'll need to return and replace the CPU - turning on the m/b outside of case where risers are not needed with no change in situation seems to suggest this.
