Specs:

  • ASUS M5A97 R2.0
    AMD FX-6100 X6 3300MHZ 14MB 95W AM3+
    ADATA Premier Srs 4GB 240Pin DDR3 1333
    ZOTAC GeForce GT 640 2GB DDR3
    Corsair TX650w

Problem:

No video display, no post. Mobo LED all green. All fans on. My LCD monitor says no signal. I switched monitors and same problem. After some trouble shooting, I RMA'd the mobo. Received new mobo and to my dismay, I have the same problem. Definitely not the mobo.

Diagnosis thus far:

Removed unnecessary components and breadboarded the system. CPU+heatsink/fan, 1 DIMM, and VGA (no onboard video, only video card). I receive 1 long beep and 4 short beeps (not 3 beeps). Manual says this pattern means a hardware component failure. That's not very helpful.

Cleared CMOS. No effect.

Removed video card. 1 long beep, 3 short beeps, followed by a delay and then 1 long beep and 4 short beeps. Reinserted video card. Back to 1 long beep, 4 short beeps.

Removed DIMM. 1 long beep, 4 short beeps. Reinstalled DIMM. 1 long beep, 4 short beeps. Tried both sticks individually in each of the 4 sockets. Same result. Tried MemOk! No use. Only thing I notice is at power up, the LED lights red 1 short blink and 1 long blink, then goes away.

Removed video card and DIMM. 1 long beep, 2 short beeps on a repeated loop. Reinstalled video card and DIMM. Back to 1 long beep, 4 short beeps.

Removed CPU and reinstalled. No effect.

Where I am now:

Here at toms hardware. I will says this. I'm at work right now and scoured through the mobo manual looking for something, anything, that might help. I had a friend the other night say that he encountered the same problem years ago and it seemed it had something to do with the cpu fan not mounted properly even though it was powered. I checked the manual specs and noticed that I actually plugged my cpu fan into a chassis fan connector. Could something like that actually cause all these problems? Whatever advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately no, but I do have two sticks and tried them both in each slot. Seems unlikely that both be bad.

Hi,
1 long 4 short could be related to a BIOS issue (not supporting the CPU) although according to ASUS no BIOS update is necessary for FX 6100.
I would try though using the flashback for flashing the BIOS.
Download and unzip the latest version from ASUS. Rename (use the renamer utility downloaded from ASUS) and save it on an USB formatted USB stick.
Insert the USB drive in the flashback USB port (don't start the board, just make sure that the power supply is connected and turned on) and press the flashback button for 3 seconds.

It was the CPU fan connected to the chassis fan causing the hardware failure. Also, noobfail because my monitor had to be switched to analog I'm guessing because I had to use a dvi to vga converter.

Thanks for the contributions.
