Hi there, I'm new to this forum. I'm not much of a tech guy, but I can struggle through some stuff. Any help I can find would be greatly appreciated as I'm on a budget to get this thing up and running. I also know there are a few threads related to this but I didn't really see the answer I was looking for.

As the title suggests I have an old precision m6600 that I want to upgrade the GPU in. I found a few things online talking about compatible gpus. I landed on the GTX 680 m. I have a friend of mine who is much more tech savvy than me. He successfully installed the GPU and is unable to update the driver. He referenced the fact that support through Nvidia more than likely has been dropped on this older GPU. If anyone has any insight to a fix for this or knows of a comparable GPU that definitely does work it would be appreciated. Also the GTX 680m that I purchased appears to be a Dell part. Thank you again.

You are looking at the wrong figures. The 680M is a 100W part. Which is a lot for a laptops to be fair, but the M6600 is a decently large laptop.

The desktop GTX680 recommends having a 550W powersupply for the whole computer.

I suppose it comes down to what you replaced whether you have the cooling and power for such a card. I would think the capacity would have been built in to handle all the potential compatible hardware.

Yes, you could use something like MSI Afterburner to limit its power requirements, but that might not be the problem.

Dell OEM drivers and maybe even a BIOS update on the motherboard, or even the GPU might help. Keep in mind that...
I would probably check at Dell for drivers, OEM cards can be a little finicky. Might also need to reset the BIOS on the laptop to get it to start working.

New driver support has ended for older cards, but the last compatible driver should still technically work.

Typically you are stuck with contemporary GPUs to the laptop. Very rare for a newer GPU to drop right in.

We got the card successfully installed but now every time anything that uses the GPU loads the screen goes blue. I'm thinking it could be a power issue. The m6600 is using 240 watts and I found that the gtx680m looks like it needs 550 watts. Is there such a charger for a laptop? Can I under clock the GPU so it needs less power?

Thank you, I realized that the one I looked at was the desktop version. Could the GPU just be junk?

So the computer seems to recognize the GPU is present but when I open task manager there is no monitoring going on for the GPU. The green GPU graph is not there at all. I was able to play a video on YouTube at Max settings. But when I try to open steam it crashes.
