MAC address alarm

Howdy all...

I am in need of a software which would play sound when specified MAC address logs onto the router. I don't need any other functionality, I just need that alarm thingy.

If you know which software does that please tell me.

Typically, routers have no means to play a sound. What sort of device (PC, laptop, smart phone, etc) are you concerned about?

Also, why do you want to know if a particular MAC address has connected to the network? Please clarify.

Are you talking about an e-mail notification? You can set it up to call out to your phone.

Whatsup Gold can do this. You could even set it up to call out to your phone. I'm sure there are other things that can as well.

That is an interesting possible solution for a corporate/government/professional environment. Probably overkill for personal use. Still good thinking of a network monitoring app/suite to accomplish this task (as asked by the OP).

That's why I said there has to be something else similar.

If you know the mac address, you could just block it so it can't connect.

No, I don't need to block it. All users must be able to connect to the router, but I am interested only in specific one. I am tasked to check the specific MAC address (specific user) but I can't check every now and then if it has got online, so I would like a little program which would watch the router (the type is TP-LINK) and play a sound when specified MAC address gets connected so I would get notified to start the capture. I tried searching on google but found nothing... There are PCs and latops connected but the one that I need is from PC.

So, you are targeting a specific user to capture their network traffic. Since this sounds like an office environment, make sure your legal folks are on-board with the intent behind this. Depending on your jurisdiction, these sorts of monitoring activities can get very touchy.

What are you actually trying to see? There are programs(proxy servers) that can track what users are doing, and they can get pretty granular so you capture a days worth of logs, and filter only that mac address, and you get a report.

Its going to be tough with the factory software. Generally you would have the router log stuff like this to a external server or you would poll on a regular basis with a server using SNMP. I guess you could write a script on a server and have it log into the router and constantly display the active mac addreses but I suspect you would have to write that yourself. The factory software is getting more and more advanced so it may have some new feature like this by now.

The only way I really know how to do things like with is with third party firmware like dd-wrt. At that point you can use the 2 method I listed and most likely many more since you can run scripts on the router itself. I know people send email directly from the router but I have never done it.

Of course it's legal, i'm just fighting terrorism (national security and stuff).

Anyways, I'm such an idiot. In my software that I use for capturing there is an alarm option, but it didn't work and I didn't know why it didn't work and it didn't work because this software recognizes MAC addresses in format aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff and I was typing it in this format aa-bb-cc-dd-ee-ff (it was like that in my router so I just copy/pasted) and now when I changed it works fine (there are some advanced alarms too)!
The problem is for some reason i have to reassociate the node in order for it to decrypt the packets, so I have to do it manually when the person gets connected. If I turn it on to just automatically capture everything will stay encrypted.

Anyways, I did it, mission accomplished, sayonara, cha cha, goodbye, love you mom!
