[SOLVED] Mac Pro not verifying disk

Mac turns on then off. Held C then install window came up, went to disk utility, selected hard drive, tried to verify disk permissions but "error: the underlying task reported failure on exit." The only thing important is the pictures. What do I do?

"The underlying task reported failure" is a very rare error, which indicates that your HDD has problems that the Disk Utility cannot fix.
If you can still access your drive, I'd suggest to back up whatever you can.
Afterwards you need to perform a Erase and Install of your MAC OS X on that drive, this will basically erase all your data.
That's why it's pretty important always to have a backup of it somewhere else.

Hi again!

You can do a simple copy/paste of your most precious data or you can use Time Machine (built-in backup app) on your Mac Pro that can backup everything. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1427
I think the second option would be best if you had an external drive with bigger capacity.
If you are backing up to DVD's, I'd suggest to simply copy and paste all the stuff you want to save, before verifying your HDD.
