Hello!

I have a Windows 10 PC. Specs (at least the ones important to my question) are as follows: NVIDIA Geforce 1070 6GB (Founder's Edition), Asus X99 Deluxe II mobo, Windows 10 Pro. I want to connect a 27" Thunderbolt display (made by Apple, model A1407) to my PC. It would be the only monitor. I also don't care particularly much about the USB ports and peripheral ports located on the display. I know that my motherboard has a USB-C connector on it, and I know that I will need a USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 connector (made by Apple directly) to connect the display. However, I am just not sure that I will be able to get it to connect via USB-C. I am skeptical for some reason or another. I also have the ThunderboltEX3 card that came with my motherboard (also made by Asus), but I can't seem to get that working. I do know for sure that the USB-C port that's directly on my mobo works for USB devices, but I'm not sure that it will support thunderbolt 3 (which in turn will be converted to thunderbolt 2 via my adapter) as well. Can anyone confirm/deny this working or not? Any help would be greatly appreciated! As well, I have talked with apple. They confirmed that the display would be compatible if used with the aforementioned adapter and then plugged into a macbook pro's USB-C port. However, I am not sure that the USB-C port on my motherboard is thunderbolt 3 compatible, and once again, I cannot seem to get the ThunderboltEX3 card to work (any help with that would be much appreciated as well). Thanks for the help!!

Thank You,

Dylan T.

Did you read the manual which tells you how to install the card?

Most of ASUS's motherboards built-in usb type c has no support for thunderbolt 3 as they use an Asmedia controller for usb 3.1. Only Intel USB 3.1 controllers are Thunderbolt 3 compliant.
You would have to use the ThunderboltEX3 card to add in support for Thunderbolt.

Got it. Do you have any idea how to hook up the EX3 card correctly (with correct bios settings as well)? I can't figure that out either. Thanks!

If you don't know where the thunderbolt header is on your motherboard, look up your motherboard' manual.

Awesome - thanks for the help. I uninstalled and then reinstalled the drivers, switched the PCI slot that the card was in, and then restarted the system. It works now - after a few months of testing, it finally works - thanks!
