Hi,

I have been looking all over the internet for an answer to my problem of a Macbook 2009 installed with 10.9.2 (Mavericks). The internal keyboard (icelandic) has stopped working properly, actually it types... but either blank spaces or nothing at all. My external USB keyboard works fine and the bluetooth keyboard also once it starts.

At first I thought it was because I had upgraded to 10.9.2, so I did a clean install of 10.9.2, but even then it did not work, then I rolled it back to 10.8.5, since I remembered the keyboard working fine at that time. But THAT too did not work.
It is not taking the Boot commands (through internal or External keyboard) of resetting NVRAM or safeboot, the reset SMC works erratically. I can't seem to work out the cause of this problem.

I hope someone here can give me a clue...
Thank you

Solution
FINALLY I FOUND A SOLUTION...

Posting this as a help for someone who might be stuck in the same situation...

Somehow my keyboard mapping has got corrupted and since I could not find a direct way to edit the keymapping for Mac I used a superb software called KeyRemap4MacBook and it has remapped my key settings, over-riding the defaults in my Macbook and now I can happily work on my macbook. It seems that somehow there is a hardware error and my Left Shift key is not working but all the rest now work properly...

Solution
Hello. I searched for a solution to this same problem for many hours and I want to say that the KeyRemap4MacBook-8.4.0.dmg fixed my problem. This was on a Macbook 7.1 A1342 from 2009 and running Mac OS X 10.6.3
I looked high and low and only this tread and another (the original answer) had this solution.
The problem was that all of the "letter" keys would only appear as blank spaces or some crazy looking symbol, while the CAPS lock, Enter and similar keys still would work. An external keyboard worked also.
I hope this helps others out just as well as it helped me!

Glad you found it useful Kaeny... Also if you're using an Alu external keyboard... you'll realise it does not give any PVRAM or SMC commands... 😛
regards
