Question Macbook OSX Crashes

Hey there, a friend of mine has a Macbook (Mid 2010) and about 2 years ago it started crashing frequently. The crashes occured at random times, but also at certain situations, like switching tabs.
We thought it was an overheating problem, thus I cleaned the notebook from dust inside and I noticed the thermal compound on both the small Intel and the Nvidia GPU "exhaled", so there wasn't a layer anymore (there was a normal layer of TC on the CPU though). I applied a new layer of PK-3 on all 3 chips. I added a small heatsink on the GPU switching chip too.
After that I was quite sure the crashes wouldn't occure anymore, but today I was told the PC has crashed two times since that. So I wasn't right with my suggestion.

So here's my question, what do you think is the problem? I can provide more information or pictures if necessary.

After it crashed the last time, the OS coughed up this error message. I'm not well versed in Macs, but maybe it helps:

have you tried a new hard drive,if that doesn't help time to replace ,you can part out the system and sell or use hd ram wifi card

because its old , you could test this by running system from a live cd linux distro
