This particular system belonged to someone who passed away. It's been decided to simply erase(wipe) the SSD and dispose of the Mac. The display is completely smashed and nothing is visible on it. I've tried that "trick" of connecting an external display and closing the lid as soon as I hit the power button, but it didn't work.
I am able to get the SSD to show up in 'Disk Utility' on another Mac while in "Target Disk Mode". Every time I try to Erase or Partition the SSD, it fails(usually some permission issue). I have tried using the Terminal command "diskutil unmountdisk force", but I still get a failure(permissions issue) even after doing that.
Since it asks for a keychain password whenever it mounts the drive, my other thought was to try and reset the password. Although turns out that's not allowed(which I now know). I did reach out to Apple regarding this matter, but do not have any "Proof of Ownership" and basically they weren't able to help at all. - So I am not asking for help with this method !
If anyone here knows of any other way to Erase or Partition this SSD, any help is appreciated. If it's just not possible, I'm going to disassemble the Mac and destroy the logic board.
thanks
