[SOLVED] Macbook Pro 2008 reinstall operating system

I have a Macbook pro 2008. I have no bloody clue how I am supposed to reinstall the operating system on it. It cannot boot into the os because my friend screwed around with it trying to wipe it. If there is still info on it, I want it completely wiped. I need a fresh install.

Anyone here know anything about macs and could help me?

Well I burned lion to a dvd but it failed to boot from it.

What form was it in and how did you burn it?

I burned it to a dvd using TransMac. The format of the operating system was a .dmg

From what I understand a Command-R can be done on start up. That should launch into internet recovery and give options to reinstall OS.
