Macbook Pro - Retina Display damaged, use external monitor?

Hello,

I have a 2014 Macbook Pro with the retina display. The retina display has died; I took it to a local apple store, and was told it would be $280 to have it replaced.

A potentially bigger issue is that I haven't backed up any of my files. Would it be possible to hook up the macbook pro to an external monitor, and then back up my files onto an external hard drive? My main concern is losing all of my data. I'm just not sure the display would show up on the external monitor.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Your MacBook should have a monitor output..one of these: Thunderbolt, HDMI or DisplayPort.
You might need to press certain button combinations too (I am not an Apple user)

Usually..(on normal laptops outside Apple world)
If the one that died is really only the display you should be able to use external display.
