[SOLVED] MacBook storage upgrade

I have a PC but I’m looking at getting a MacBook Air for taking around. (I like MacOS for web browsing and light work and Windows for pretty much everything else so I’m looking to boot camp).

Would I be able to get the lowest storage model and just swap out the 128GB SSD for a 500 model so I can divide the drive into 250GB for each OS minus formatting and OS storage of course. Apple charge 150 just to double the storage and I can buy a 500GB for that and keep the 128 for a future boot drive.

Thanks.

Mac compatible SSD are available (though you have to match the year also since Apple doesn't even use the same proprietary connector for each model/year). I was just making sure this was understood. A time machine backup should work also.

Cost is a bit harder to judge but I'd bet you can beat Apple.
Apple uses proprietary connectors for their SSDs; common m.2 drives won't fit in a Mac.

Formatting the blank drive from a High Sierra installer also isn't as straightforward due to changes in Disk Utility. Recent versions of MacOS don't show unformatted partitions there, only ones with some kind of file system.
