I recently cleared out my mothers basement and found an original Macintosh 128 with the original keyboard, floppy disk reader, mouse, and printer in all working condition. Unfortunately the box was no where to be found but I was able to scavenge a few users manuals. I ran the serial code through a decoder and discovered it was the 844th Macintosh 128 made which made me pretty excited. After a few days i finally got around to dusting her off and noticed there was a label on the back below the FCC ID that labeled the Mac as a 512k. After doing some research i discovered Apple had an upgrade option where users could send their Mac's in to be upgraded. Does this make the Macintosh more valuable or does this mean it's essentially a 512k? Either way it's nice to have this amazing piece of history though. Thanks for the replies :)

It is worth less than a 128k. Depending on condition a whole lot less as a mint 128K can fetch $2700 while a mint 512k can fetch about $525. In simply working condition they can go up to $650 and $200 respectively. As to how much the conversion hurts the value I could not say for certain. From a rarity standpoint there would have been less 128K to 512K conversions than actual 512K or 128K models sold. So it should be more valuable than a 512K. From a collectors standpoint it is modified. It is no longer an original 128K or 512K unit. So it should be worth less than a true 512K. It's tough to predict how a collector will react. Especially as this is an official factory upgrade.
