I've been playing Mafia 3 for about 3 days now and it's very good in every aspect. The graphics, the sounds, the story and the story telling. Also the physics are a great improvement over Mafia II.
But I can't help but compare Mafia 3 with Mafia 1 which in my opinion, at least when it comes to the story, the scenarios and playability is still the best one.

Which one is your favorite, why?

Don't forget that Mafia 3's sky looks worst than the sky from the original Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and it's quite buggy as well. I would go for Mafia 1, hands down.

Story wise mafia 3 have a great story. It's a newer than the other two so graphics is oviously better but comparing to other next gen games the graphics is so-so. Textures are muddier and blurry. AI isn't that great too. To give vintage feel whole world is yellowish and dull looking. Some missions are great but most of them feels like filler. I am playing mafia 3 currently but few minor bugs breaks my immersion.

I feel the same way about Mafia 3, it's a great game overall, better than Mafia 2 that's for sure. But when i remember the missions in Mafia 1, I miss the way they were so much harder than today's games. I guess it's inevitable and part of the way games evolve along with its players. Games tend to get easier and easier as time goes by and so they also get less engaging than the games made in the Mafia 1 era.

I also remember another great game from that same era called Vietcong, and to me, it was and still is the best war FPS game ever. You really had to pay attention to every single step you took and a single bullet usually was enough to kill you whereas in today's FPS games you are pretty much invincible, it's a shame.
