This is my build:

AMD Sapphire R9 390X
Intel i5 4690k @ 3.5ghz
8gb Corsair Vengeance RAM
Corsair VS650 PSU

I'll not bother listing my motherboard and all that, as it's irrelevant.

I recently bought mafia III, and upon checking my CPU usage whilst playing, I noticed it's constantly at 100%. This is an issue, because i'm getting pretty low FPS in game, I get about 70 whilst in a mission, or more sparse area but it drops to around 25 whenever i'm in the thick of the city.

Is anyone else getting such bad FPS, or is it my CPU bottlenecking or something? I updated my graphics drivers and everything, nothing seems to have increased FPS. I'm also running the game on the lowest available settings.

Though saying that, 40-60 on max? I literally get 20 fps on the lowest settings with my build, and it's not far dissimilar to your own..

I havent tried it on lower than max, never got below 30fps, only in 1440p, but even then it's rare, only in heavy action.
Driver is the latest, optimized for the game.

I'm playing 1080p, global quality preset on low and then nothing else changed. I'm getting 60ish in missions and indoors, then dropping to 25-30 whilst driving around in the bulk of the city.

might be Nvidia bias tbh, I don't know. I'm just mad that my specs are better than the minimum/meet some of the recommended and i'm still getting awful performance.

Honestly, it might even be CPU limited. Something is f-ed up in this game engine, because I've never seen my 6600k at a 100%, not even in GTA 5. Check with Afterburner how much your gpu is used, if it dips under 100%, then something else is the limiting factor. Or try overclocking your CPU.

It is obviously the game. One of the worst I've seen. Everyone experienving the same pretty much unplayable (unles syou lock to 30) conditions with very very average textures and graphics. AA on 'low' is clearly still ON as it is visible on edges....could be a harsh form of AA causing the issue.

Reflections are a big hitter, as is AO (at leas ton AMD).

I did manage a solid 50-60 with a good mix of settings, drops to 40's when out in dense trees. Cities are fine. I saw 90%, never 100 on the CPU, so gpu usage didn't drop.

They are certainly not getting a pence of my money for this mess.

My guess is some kind of post-processing AA (on High at least, it looks even more smeared up than medium or low), because it looks like the screen is covered with vaseline. Reflections are bad on nvidia too, haven't seen problems with AO so far, but there are other problems with the lighting.

I think they tried this fake/half-real reflection (or i don't even know what to call this, it's not even close to a reflection sometimes) because they realized how crap the performance is, real-time reflections would have killed this game.

Put Reflections and Volumetric Effects on low, they have minimal visual effect, but a big performance hit.

Agree, I noticed that. Aa seems ok on low. I forced AF through crimson. Also shadows have effect but high is not noticeable

I'm nor pretty much locked at 60fps but gpu and CPU are pegged to 100% at all times almost. It's outrageous!

Reckon its playable and at least is fun. Shame it still looks so basic. I'm dipping into Witcher and Just Cause 3 as I still have to complete them. It's nice to remind what proper open world games should look like in this decade.

Interesting read. Particularly needing a hexacore and seomthing more than a 980ti for maxed out 1080p...quite amusing.

game requires a really powerful GPU, its visuals do not justify these requirements. The game already looks dated and does not come close to other open-world titles, like Grand Theft Auto V or The Witcher 3. While the characters are made of a high amount of polygons, they look like plastic dolls. There is noticeable pop-in of objects, and the lighting effects did not impress us at all. What also surprised us was the fact that there is no option to adjust the game’s textures. Not only that, but the game is filled with low-resolution textures.
All in all, Mafia 3 is a huge letdown. While the game performs and looks better on the PC than its console brother, it’s nowhere up to what we’ve expected. Furthermore, the game comes with some ridiculously high and unjustifiable PC requirements (regarding 60fps). Mafia 3 already looks dated, ugly and so blurry, and that’s a real shame!

wow,100% CPU usage with core i5 6600K at 4.5Ghz. it's weird, i get 60-78% CPU usage with core i7 2600 at 3.4Ghz and 100% GPU usage with MSI R390 at 1175/1600Mhz
I don't see much different between LOW and MAX setting, it's nearly the same,so I set AO HIGH, Geometry detail LOW, Shadow MEDIUM, Refection HIGH, Volumetric effect HIGH, AA LOW, and i get constant 45+ FPS on foot, and ~35 FPS when drive in the city.
Yes, the game comes with some ridiculously highly and unjustifible PC requirements and poor optimization, at least gameplay is fine, soundtrack and background music is amazing, the story seem very promising, i still have a lot of fun with the game. we still have SweetFX to improve visual , and hopefully it should be an update to improve performance.

It uses 6 cores, so I'm not surprised you have lower usage. Performance in game will be similar. Your fps are similar to mine. I see 100% gpu at all times as well, just with CPU pegged to 90%.

Refl and volumetric kill performance...turn them down.

I've had to put it to one side for now. If there was a way of locking to 60 then fine, but even on lowest it will drop to 40s...not acceptable and makes it a pain to play. Awful stuttering as well. Plus it looks like something from 2010.

Unacceptable and I'm really upset that bunch of amateurs has my money for an unfinished product!

actually, 45+ FPS for me is not that bad, with a freesync monitor it's pretty smooth or may be i'm easy-going ^^! i use this https://sfx.thelazy.net/games/preset/6204/ to improve visual, the game finally "playable" for me,why dont you try turn off FPS counter and find some good about the game that you can have fun on, don't waste 60$ for nothing but frustration.
