When I first setup Windows 10, there was an icon on the taskbar that was shaped like an envelope. I think it was for mail, but I opted to remove it from the taskbar. What was it called and how can I get it back? It doesn't show up as any of the apps.

Solution
If it doesn't show up when you search for mail, go to Microsoft store, search for mail, click mail and calendar, install it, now it's in your apps, and you can pin it to the start menu or whatever.
You're talking about the Windows 10 Mail App icon. If you hit WinKey and type Mail, it's the first thing that will be returned in the search results and you can use the context menu that appears beneath it on the right to pin it either to the Taskbar or Start Menu.

If it's not there, and doesn't show up under a search for "mail", chances are, you didn't 'unpin' it from the start menu, you removed it outright. While it's built into W10, it's totally optional & can be removed.

As @Remeca mentioned, if it doesn't show up with a search, you'll need to reacquire the app from the MS Store.

Given the effort it takes to uninstall Windows 10 built ins, which is not insignificant, I never presume that anyone has done this without being aware that they've done it. It's not something that can ever happen "by accident."

Others, apparently, feel differently.

If I were missing the Mail App and know that I never did remove it intentionally, I would promptly be doing the following:

1. Using SFC (System File Checker) and DISM (Deployment Imaging Servicing and Management) to Repair Windows 8 & 10

2. Doing a Windows 10 Repair Install or Feature Update Using the Windows 10 ISO file

I actually did the same exact thing as OP. Clean install of Windows 10, first thing I did was remove Cortana and mail icons from the taskbar. Never uninstalled anything, but when I searched mail after reading this thread, I had to go redownload it from the app store.

Nope. Winkey did not show Mail at all. Just the side bar with all the pgms. Typing 'mail' in search can't find it either.
I never uninstalled it before, just opted to remove it from the task bar. I'll try DFC next. Thanks.

Thank you. It worked. :)

But now I have 3 "calendar" icons in my start menu (popup menu when clicking on the Win icon in corner). And no option to unpin it from start. Just uninstall.

For certain elements, including the "apps", like 'Mail', it's a one right-click and uninstall - easy done.

There's 'unpin', but also and option that'll remove/uninstall. It's one of the first things I remove post-clean install, and there's a few of the app-types that can be removed very easily. Some of the other optional (yet included by default) apps/services/programs are a little more of a process to do so,

@Barty1884, exactly. For example, if I right-click on my newly restored Mail icon on the taskbar, it only offers unpin. Not uninstall. But when I did that last time, it was gone forever. Maybe along with Calendar since they come as a package apparently; but I never use Calendar, so I'm not sure.
