I always recommend a fresh install on a new SSD, but...

What you need is a migration tool. Some drives will come with one on a disk. Or CloneZilla and DriveImageXML will do it as well.

You can't just...

ya i plan on getting a ssd at least 500gb. i like the way my os is running now so im not doing a fresh install. i just want to take the image from the old drive and put it on the new one. in the past ive tryed to do a drag and drop from one drive to another but i get errors because the os is using the files.

if i load a disk copy of linux will that let me do a complete drive copy?

You can't just drag and drop from one boot drive to another, and Linux has nothing to do with this scenario.
