My Minecraft usually runs at 50-60 fps and i opened it a couple days ago and it randomly started running really low fps (3-5). My laptop runs the other games i play fine (DayZ, Rust, Don't Starve). I downloaded optifine in an attempt to improve the game play a bit but it didn't do anything.

So it is running Minecraft horribly, and it is running DayZ, etc etc etc. just fine? Odd. I would check your Java version. Is it 64-bit? I remember my friend once had a 32-bit Java for Minecraft and he had a 64-bit computer. Didn't work well at all. It would crash a ton, and at one point he couldn't even play. The problem at first wasn't so annoying for him, the crashing barely occured. But after some time the crashing started happening way too much and he couldn't play. I looked into it, and fixed it by installing the latest 64-bit Java. https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp pick 64-bit Offline. UNLESS you don't have a 64-bit computer for some reason. Don't know how you are running DayZ fine with that amount of RAM (About 4 gigs on 32-bit...).
Another thing. Check if your power settings are fine. Did you also try restarting the computer? Just throwing out possibilities. Also check your CPU usage while playing, and post it here if these possibilities come out false.

I'm having this problem as well. I'm running Windows 10 with Java 8 and a Nvidia Graphics card. I'm assuming it's either Windows 10 or Java that is the problem as my Graphics Card is up to date (I've checked, I promise). I can't remember if I've run minecraft on Windows 10 successfully in the past as I haven't played for a few months. Could be that this is the first time I've tried it on Windows 10.
