Major lag spikes when TV is on

So I've always had lag spikes while gaming online while the TV in my living room is on. For example, I'll be playing something like Battlefield or Star wars battlefront. I'll get HUGE lag spikes, upwards of 700+ ping. This only happens when the TV in the living room is on (my family tends to watch TV a lot) and its getting on my nerves. The same thing happens with every game I own, but when the TV is off my connection is smooth as butter. Right now the router is on the 2nd floor almost directly above me (my room is on the first floor) and I'm using a belkin USB adapter as my way of connecting to the router. Would upgrading to a PCI-E network adapter fix this problem, or is there another solution to this? Thanks in advance!

Do you have a Smart Tv that's connected to the router?

It sounds like that could be why, but if you're not actually using any of the internet features you could change the TV settings so it doens't connect to the network anymore.

Have you tried using an ethernet cable to see if it's just the wifi that's going bad?

Unfortunately I have time warner cable as my internet. But I have Directv as my tv service.

Well we moved into a new house in late 2014 and they mentioned using copper wiring instead of fiber optics. So it wouldn't surprise me if that were the case.

yep copper wiring will do that. only thing you can do would be try to space out the cables or unbind them if the sat cables are bundled with the cable internet ones
