I want to have a 4.1 (or possibly a 5.1) setup, but don't want to spend a whole lot of cash. I currently have the good old Microsoft Digital Sound System 80's (2 speakers + Sub) and a Seismic Edge 5.1 soundcard. Instead of purchasing a new 4.1 set of speakers, I'm thinking of just simply getting a pair of stereo speakers and using them for the rear left and right outputs. What do you recommend for a good pair of stereo speakers that sound good, but don't cost more than $40 or $50? Thanks in advance :)

Yamaha makes excellent bookshelf speakers for about $50. I bought a pair for my gym and you get pretty decent sound especially if you add a subwoofer. The only drawback is the lack of decent lows, but if you have the sub, you're golden. BTW they're kinda big too. I'll see if I can find a link.

Here's a link to customer reviews of the speakers I have:

I also got these speakers at 6th Ave. Electronics. I picked them up for $48. If you search hard enough you'll find them or similar models cheap. Good luck.

I use a set of Altec Lansing APT3's on my front and some cheap logitecs out back. Best part is, the APT3's are so old, you can find them for under $40. And they sound great!
