I have an external WD MyBook I have hooked up to a Linksys WRT 1900 ACS. The router is running its stock firmware.

I want to use the MyBook as a shared network drive, to be visible between my desktop & my parents' laptop. My desktop is a Windows 10 machine, build version 1809, with the latest updates.

The problem is when I try to map the network drive to \\192.168.1.1\, as the router page suggested, the PC is unable to discover the location.
After some time I found that Microsoft pushed an update in October, 2018 which broke the network drive mapping functionality. I've discovered fixes around the web for already mapped drives to become visible again, but I haven't been able to find anything related to mapping new drives, which is my case here.

So my question is - is there a way to achieve what I'm after without changing the router firmware & possibly without touching the PC's registry settings?

Solution
The fact that \\192.168.1.1 (assuming that this is your router' internal IP address) did not give you anything (even "Access denied") means that your router-with-WD is not properly configured.

Don't blame Microsoft for things they are not responsible for. Network mapping (SMB/Lan Manager) is there for 20+ years, and there aren't too much things to go wrong there.
why would you want to map a drive to what I assume is your routers address? That router page is giving odd advice.

Find the mybook on the network section of file explorer, find the folder you want, under 'easy access' on the ribbon (under the home>new section) and map it?
