I purchased a controller card http://sybausa.com/productInfo.php?iid=1376. I am wanting to hook up a SAMSUNG 850 EVO-Series MZ-75E500B/AM 2.5" 500GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive to this.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte MA790x-ds5. I have went into the bios and have activated AHCI.

My question is ...Will this chip-set support TRIM. If not anybody have any better suggestions
Thanks
Arnie

Because you already got the card, I recommend to do some test by yourself. 1) put it into the pciex1 slot. 2) put it into the pcie2.0x16 ( the 2nd one). 3) Install the SSD into the SATAII port on the MB. And run the benchmark software, you will see the better result will be either the card with SSD in the pcie2.0X16 or SSD in the SATAII port on the MB. That is why I don't use any add-on card for the SSD.
For you question, you can use the SAMSUNG software to check the TRIM function works or not.

If I use the software to transfer my c drive to ssd, or doing a clean install of windows 7?

I have the option of returning the card. What would you suggest I do. This SSD drive is all new to me.

If you can return the card just do it, then use the SATAII port for the SSD, even they are the AMD type, because the sataII is more than enough for the SSD. Here is one review. http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ssd-upgrade-sata-3gbps,review-32673.html
And use it until you really want to upgrade the pc, then buy the whole new PC.

If the OS is in the regular HDD, I will recommend to do the clean installation, not the cloning method.

Yes, either way should work. A clean install might be the best option.
