So, let me start off saying that I got my Dell XPS 8500 in 2012. I knew absolutely nothing about computers then. If I had known that most pre-made computers suck, I would't have gotten one.

I've done my research and looked into it, and have decided to upgrade my XPS, It has no more room for improvement, and I want to take the CPU, Ram, HDD, and the Optical Drive out. My question is, will these new components be compatible.

Components I want to move out:
CPU: Intel i7 3770 3.4 Ghz
Ram: 16 GB (Came with the dell, not sure which brand or MHz though)
HD: 2 TB
Optical Drive: Factory stock OD
OS : Windows 8 Professional (At least I think it is)

New components:
Case : Corsair Obsidian 750D Black ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Solution
The only changes would be a new power supply if the video card makes the current power supply go over 70% of its capacity.

Ask for suggestions on the best solid state hard drives at the moment

There is no reason to rush into upgrading. Also play around with the performance settings in windows, there is a lot of unnecessary eye candy.

What a wast of money! Why the hell do you want to spend all the money for nothing? I don't see any real improvement. You have done your research, but you don't know what os version you have? Save all the money and buy a ssd for the os, that's an improvement.

Hi

You have not said anything about a graphics card, either old or new

You won't get much of an improvement in performance with your upgrade
Add a PCI-e USB 3.0 card and a mid range graphic card for much less money and save up for a new socket 1150 CPU and motherboard

CPU-z. Will tell you about CPU, ram and motherboard specs, or hwinfo 32 or 64 or any other well known system info program

My graphics card is an ASUS R9 270. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121823
The reason I want a new PSU, Motherboard and Case is because the current Dell XPS 8500 PSU has 450w, I can hardly believe the GPU is running stable. The motherboard only has one slot for a video card, I planned on putting another R9 270 in. I wanted a new case because the current case is small, cramped, and doesn't really support any other PSU/MB.

PS:My ram is DDR3 16 GB 800 MHz
OS is Microsoft Windows(6.2) 64 bit

Why would I need a new SSD? I haven't ever used any of them in my previous builds as I never saw the use for them.

the solid state hard drive would be the cheapest and easiest way to make your computer 'feel' faster

Wait till you test your components and complete your build before selling the computer though if you decide on that.

It seems that people have to wait for all their components to come in before testing parts so it is is easier to have a desktop readily available to check if all the parts are working rather than having to put everything together.

I just buy demo/display desktops from staples every 6 months when they put out that $100 off clearance computer coupon and pop in a new video card and a new power supply since it is cheaper than buying the RAM, MOBO, OS and hard drive. The desktops are usually $80 to $150 after applying the coupon. I just keep getting new mediocre computers >.<

Hi,
if I may suggest, as I have exactly the same Dell XPX 8500 except my memory is 12Gb, I upgraded my PSU to seasonic x660, install a 120gb SSD as cache and GPU to GTX 680 4gb about 2 years back. Last year I built a new rig with a 4770k, SSD and 16Gb,780 SLI and recently 295x2 QF, and I have to say that the XPS is still quite capable of maximising every game at 1080p and most at 1440p. The only reason I am using my current rig is that I am gaming at 4k.

Such is the capability of that system built 2 yrs back, it would probably last another 2 years without much problems.
If you are thinking of upgrading, may I suggest changing platform to x79 or even x99 which probably would be more expensive but having more capable hardware for the future.

Cheers and goods luck.
