Hi guys. I am a big home theater guy and I love the idea of things like kaleidescape.com servers. However I am not crazy rich and cannot afford servers that cost 50k+. It is that much because of my collection. I have about 3000 dvds and 500 blu-rays. Just going off an average that is about:

3000*7gb = 21tb
500*40gb = 20tb

So lets say 40tb of needed space. I was thinking something like this using 4tb drives. Raid 6 for safety (lots of drives). 2 dedicated for raid and 12 for the storage. 14 drives. 12x4=48gb (around 43 usable). 14 drives I figured around 250 per drive.

Breakdown:
$150 - Case: Full Tower with 12 x 5.25 externals - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811815011
$360 - Hot Swap Sleds: 3 to 5 drive 3.5 sleds - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215342 need 3
$200 - MSI Z87 MPower or something similar
$400 - Intel i7 4770k
$200 - Corsair 1000w Power Supply - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816215342
$160 - G-Skill Ripsaw X 16gb (2x8) @ 1866
$3500 - 14 4tb Sata III raid drives
$250 - MSI GTX 760 TF - for help with playback and encoding (certain applications of course)
$100 - CPU Cooler and Case Fans - the sleds have built in cooling for the drives as well.
$60 - Two Blu-Ray drives for ripping
$360 - UPS 1050w - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102145
Total Cost:
5740 plus raid controller - I have no idea what a good controller would be for this many drives. I figure 600 to 1k for that. Lets go with my high number.

$6740 total

I have MS Home Server and MS Server. Was leaning towards home server for simplicity. This price puts my in the ballpark of a HP rack mount NAS server, but they don't have the full machine like this and would require a separate machine to do the ripping and decoding. The one I have above would be an all-in-one media server.

My question then becomes this. Is this a feasible build idea??? What raid card could I use? What are the major pitfalls of doing it this way vs going rack server? Do you have any better ideas? And also what would be a good software for displaying my library and using it for playback (full folder rip not MKVs - 100% in tact rips)? I have been thinking about this for months and I know it is going to be very hard. I have built lots of desktops, but nothing like this. My area of expertise is corporate software development and less so hardware and raids. Thank you guys for bearing with me and sharing your knowledge.

add two more small drives for the OS and the OS backup drive.

Better add another $100 and grab enterprise grade drives for an array that large.

You are going to want hot spares, add at least 1 more 4tb drive in.

A card, your probably looking at an lsi 9260 or 9280 or maybe a 9650se card if you dont mind sacrificing speed which I doubt you'll need in a media server :)

Yeah the speed should not be a problem. This is going to be used solely for a home theater. Ya I think I will add SSDs for the OS. As for the drives I was pulling Seagate raid drives vs normal 4tb drive they are about 170. By enterprise are you saying SAS or is there a better SATA option. Maybe just link me an example drive. That would be helpful.
